The arthouse and horror legend David Cronenberg returns for his first feature film in eight years, ‘Crimes of the Future’. The sci-fi thriller is set in Greece and has already begun production for Serendipity Point Films and Argonauts Productions. The shooting takes place entirely in Athens from early August and is expected to finish in September 2021.

Internationally acclaimed actors Tanaya Beatty (‘Yellowstone’, ‘Through Black Spruce’) and Nadia Litz (‘Big Muddy’, ‘Hotel Congress’, ‘Blindness’) are included in the already announced cast of the film, together with Viggo Mortensen (‘A History of Violence’, ‘Eastern Promises’, ‘Green Book’), Léa Seydoux (‘No Time to Die’, ‘The French Dispatch’, ‘Blue is the Warmest Color’), Kristen Stewart (‘Seberg’, ‘Clouds of Sils Maria’, ‘Twilight’), Scott Speedman (‘Barney’s Version’, ‘Adoration’, ‘Sharp Stick’), Welket Bungué (‘Berlin Alexanderplatz’) ,Don McKellar (‘Blindness’, ‘eXistenZ’), and Lihi Kornowski (‘Losing Alice’). From Greece participate George Karamihos and George Pyrpasopoulos.

According to Viggo Mortensen: “As we begin filming Crimes of the Future, just two days into this new adventure with David Cronenberg, it feels like we’ve entered a story he collaborated on with Samuel Beckett and William Burroughs, if that were possible. We are being pulled into a world that is not quite like this or any other, and yet is one that feels strangely familiar, immediate and quite credible. I can’t wait to see where we end up.”

‘Crimes of the Future’ is an original screenplay from the mind of Cronenberg, whose last original screenplay was ‘eXistenZ’ in 1999. The plot of the film takes a deep dive into the not-so-distant future where humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings. This evolution moves humans beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis known as “Accelerated Evolution Syndrome” that alters their biological makeup.

Produced by Robert Lantos, the film is a reunion of D. Cronenberg with three-time Oscar nominee Viggo Mortensen, in their fourth collaboration. Award-winning Director of Photography Douglas Koch is part of the creative team along with award-winning production designer Carol Spier and three-time Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore. Art Director is Dimitris Katsikis (Brides, Fugitive Pieces), Costume Designer is Mayou Trikerioti (Pari), sound engineer is Stefanos Efthimiou while the production organization is undertaken by Giannis Karantanis.

The Greek-Canadian co-production is made in collaboration with Ingenious Media, Coficine, Telefilm Canada, Bell Media, CBC and Harold Greenberg Fund, with the support of EKOME and HFC. At the same time, singnificant is the contribution of Athens Film Office of the Municipality of Athens during the shootings.
